The following course in Computers 1 is provided in its entirety by Atlantic
International University's "Open
Access Initiative" which strives to make knowledge
and education readily available to those seeking advancement
regardless of their socio-economic situation, location
or other previously limiting factors. The University's
Open Courses are
free and do not require any purchase or registration,
they are open to the public.
The course in Computers 1 Learning contains the following:
- Lessons in video format with explaination of theoratical content.
- Complementary activities that will make research more about the topic , as well as put into practice what you studied in the lesson. These activities are not part of their final evaluation.
- Texts supporting explained in the video.
- Evaluation questionnaire, that will grant access to the next lesson after approval.
The Administrative Staff may be part of a degree program paying up to three college credits. The lessons of the course can be taken on line Through distance learning. The content and access are open to the public according to the "Open Access" and " Open Access " Atlantic International University initiative. Participants who wish to receive credit and / or term certificate , must register as students.
Lesson 1: Operating Systems
The Operating System is a collection of software that manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs. Application software needs an Operating System for it to function. Essentially, the OS acts as an intermediary between programs and the computer hardware.
Among many other things, the OS interacts with the RAM or Random Access Memory and the CPU or Central Processing Unit RAM memory is volatile meaning that when the computer is shut off it is not stored. The CPU is what processes and manages the resources of the computer. Think of it as the brains of the computer. The RAM and CPU are housed in what is called the motherboard.
Lesson 2: The System
The OS you are most likely to work with is currently Windows 7 and thus, we will spend our time focused on Windows 7.
When working with windows, it is important to note that the Internet is the best place for more information. Windows is such a widely used system that the probability that your question has already been asked and answered by others is very high. If you encounter error messages, or just can’t find how to do something Google it! Not only will you learn a lot, but also your problem will be most likely resolved. Hoverer, sometimes it takes a while to find exactly what you are looking for so be patient.
Lesson 3: Protecting Information and Hardware
We must take measures when using computers not only to keep our files, and identity safe and secure, but also our equipment. Much like a car, taking the proper measures to protect a computer will ensure it will run as designed and not break down on us.
If the processor and other components of a system overheat, the system will get unstable and components will begin to fail and become damaged. Damaged computer parts are expensive and it is essential both for private users and corporations to keep their machines cool.
Lesson 4: Securing your computer when on the web
A lot of vulnerabilities exist when surfing the web and you have probably heard of them all but what do they actually mean and how do they work? In this lesson we will be covering everything you need to know about viruses and the different kinds that exist.
Lesson 5: The Internet
In the mid-1960s, mainframe computers in research organizations were stand-alone devices. Computers from different manufacturers were unable to communicate with one another.
The department of defense had a section called Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) was interested in finding a way to connect computers so that researches could share their findings, and eliminate costs and duplication of effort.
Thus ARPANET was created in 1969.
In 1972, two ARPANET project members collaborated to attempt to link multiple networks to each other
Lesson 6: Data and Network Communications
Data communication is the exchange of data between two devices through a form
of transmission medium such as a wire cable.
Businesses rely on the networks to function properly everyday
Lesson 7: Network Physical Structures
We have said that a network is a two or more devices connected together and that a
path is set up for communication to be reached between the two. Now we will
discuss the physical connections for Networks.
There are two possible connection types when it comes to Networks
Point-to-point or Multipoint
Point-to-point connections – provides a dedicated link or between two devices.
The entire capacity of the link is reserved for transmission between those two
devices.
Most point-to-point connections use an actual length of wire or cable to connect
the two ends, but microwave or satellite links, are also possible.
Changing the T.V with a remote is a point-to-point connection between the remote
control and the television.
Lesson 8: Office Techniques
The insert tab provides tools such as SmartArt graphics, tables, and text boxes
Powerful editing and peer reviewing tools help you work with others to make your
documents perfect.
One of the main features of word is the ability to create new documents using a
template.
The word templates come ready to use with various themes and styles depending
on what you are writing.
Lesson 9: Databases
Database means an organized collection of data. Databases have become a
standard component of systems and are found in every great system. Databases are
crucial in the daily functioning of businesses and even governments.
.
Lesson 10: Three Level Database Architecture
Also known as Three Tier, or Three Schema approach.
Databases are organized in a three level architecture.
The purpose of the Three Schema architecture is so that:
• All users should be able to access same data
• A users view should be immune to changes made in other views
• Users should not need to know physical database storage details
• DBA should be able to change database storage structures without affecting
the users view
• Internal structure of database should be unaffected by changes to physical
aspects of storage
